The Excellence in Communication Leadership (EXCEL) Award, one of the highest honors IABC can bestow, recognizes a person who is not an IABC member but exhibits leadership in fostering excellent communication.

IABC is currently seeking nominations for the 2012 Award.

In this Cafe2Go interview, Priya Bates, ABC, MC, the 2012 EXCEL Award Chair, talks about the EXCEL Award, explaining what it is and discussing how the definition of effective communication leadership has changed over the course of the Award’s history. She talks about the six criteria the Award Committee looks for in a successful CEO communicator and offers some tips for IABC members on nominating their CEO for the 2012 Award.

Priya Bates, ABC, MC, is Senior Director, Internal Communications at Loblaw Companies Limited, the largest food retailer in Canada based in Brampton, Ontario, and helps the company demonstrate best-in-class communications that engage employees and result in more effective outcomes for the business.

Prior to Loblaw, Priya spent close to eight years at Hewlett-Packard Canada and Compaq Canada where she led Internal Communications and Corporate Philanthropy. Priya is accredited by the International Association of Business Communicators and was recently recognized as a Master Communicator, a lifetime achievement awarded by IABC Canada.

Priya has a Bachelor of Science from the University of Western Ontario, and is a graduate of the Humber College Public Relations Program.
